Writing songs is something many people would like to do but they are just not sure where to start. I want to share with you a great way to get you started.
I looked at a couple of goal setting web sites and thousands of people have ‘writing songs’ or some variation of the phrase as one of their top goals for 2011. I wondered how many of them would succeed. I though maybe 10% so I looked to see how many people achieved this as a goal last year. It was nearer to 1%. That shocked me. What happened to all those other people?
I suspect many of them feel like they have to wait to be inspired, that a song will just pop into their heads and all they have to do is write it down. Thing is, most songwriters will tell you that is not how it works. For most people, like any other kind of writing, writing songs is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration. You have to show up. You have to take actions.

What that achievement will be it depends on who you are, where you are at right now, and where you would like to be. For some beginners the goal will be simply to write your first song. That’s it. In fact that’s a perfectly good goal for anybody, just to write one song that you’re happy with.
