Set in the context of social change in the post-Soviet period, it includes conversations, folktales, legends, and shamanic poems that illuminate spiritual traditions, and introduces ethnographic literature in Russian, mostly unavailable in the West. Wherever possible, the material comes through the voices of indigenous people: scholars, practitioners, and participants in cultural review.Kira Van Deusen presents an integrated, holistic picture of Turkic spiritual culture, exploring the inner world shamans and other visionaries describe and the ways they cross the boundaries between ordinary and non-ordinary reality. The book is based on a very good research with the indigenous people of Tuva and Khakassia of the Siberia. It includes beautiful epics and stories going back to the ancient times. I felt like I am touching to the very old stories of the humankind. There are also very interesting points regarding the twisted language and altered conscious. It is obvious that there is a strong connection between the Siberian and the North and South American Shamans. What a pity that these people were and are still attacked by certain religious and political groups and their destructive ways. Unfortunately their beautiful beliefs and philosophies were almost destroyed. At least some art has survived and now emerging again. Their passion to be a part of the nature and become one with the whole beings in it is the only way for our survival. We all should protect these people, their old ways and their way of living. I loved this book and learned a lot from it. I strongly recommend it.
