vigilance a heroics novel heroics 2 Reviews
I had the pleasure of reading this book early, because I know the author who enjoys my amazingly brilliant commentary I leave behind on drafts, and was quite pleased with both this novel and the growth in Kost's writing since Heroics. The central problems in Vigilance's narrative were very human, with anxiety and depression and relationships all being explored, which I felt really helped me to connect to the characters and also served as a lovely counterbalance to the superhero, action-centered parts. It also didn't feel like a traditional YA book where things are dumbed down for no reason beyond that writers and editors and publishers apparently think young adults are idiots, which this book avoids by being very honest and sometimes even gritty in the world it depicts without losing the pleasure a YA novel can bring. Also, AJ. Mmmm yes.
I won a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway. This was an okay book. Apparently it is a follow up book to one that had a young band of superheroes taking on crime in their city. In this one, the superheroes have grown older with families and adult relationships. The characters are all interwoven and, not having read the earlier book in the series, made it somewhat confusing to me at first. The list of characters in the front of the book and family trees in the back are helpful in straightening things out. It has lots of action and the plot moves at a rapid pace. I had no problem finishing it but never got fully engaged in the story. I liked it ... I didn't love it. The ending indicates that there is a lot more for these Heroics to do before their work is complete. I'd give the next book another shot.
Very interesting showing the human side to superheroes and not making it what you would expect. I won this book through the giveaways.
