My husband and I are planning a backpacking trip for this spring (a couple of days on the Superior Hiking Trail in northern Minnesota) and our first true mountain climb in Colorado in August. I went looking for a book with a fitness plan to build my strength and stamina. Curiously, this book is about hiking in name only. After the title page, hiking and mountaineering are instead called "hillwalking," the charming British term that makes it seem so much less an arduous physical challenge. Consider me a convert. Why be a pedestrian hiker or climber when you can be a romantic, wind-swept "casual rambler, dedicated Wainwright bagger or Munroeist"?Besides the delightful vocabulary, the book also has a great chapter on conditioning, including a 12-week fitness plan and suggested weight-lifting routine. Just what I needed to make sure my "hillwalks" don't become "hillstumbles."

A really useful, practical book that is informative to experienced and novice hill-walkers. There is everything from equipment advice to route planning, and even advice and food.
